Cooking time!

Some children cook well while others never get the chance to cook at home so we thought we’d look at the advantages and disadvantages at cooking with children.

Advantages to children cooking:

  • they love it – it is fun!
  • it is a great thing to do together
  • it is a valuable life skill – imagine your 25 year old child living away from home on take away because they can’t cook
  • it builds their maths skills (measuring cups, using scales, comparing weights, adjusting recipe sizes, cooking times, etc)
  • you can show that maths is useful in real life
  • they can practice their reading by reading the recipe for you
  • it can spark all sorts of interesting conversations – everyone’s favourites and least favourites, where ingredients come from, how things are grown and processed, the origins of the recipe you’re using, different forms of cooking, use of technology in cooking, different foods and rules in different cultures, nutrition, etc
  • they can see a result for their efforts
  • you can include a shopping trip as part of the cooking experience – again, there is use of maths, time together and learning a valuable life skill
  • they can learn patience waiting for something to bake or set
  • they are more likely to try different foods/ingredients if they have been involved in the preparation
  • children learn respect and proper use of sharp knives, stoves, ovens, graters, etc
  • children can learn some hygiene basics
  • you can teach them how to tidy after themselves – and how to do things like wash dishes!

Disadvantages of kids in the kitchen:

  • it requires your time and supervision
  • it can get messy
  • there is potential danger (knives, heat, etc)
  • you may need to go shopping for ingredients if you don’t usually have them

but all those disadvantages can be dealt with by changing your perspective – messy may be an inconvenience, but it’s fun and a learning experience so is often a small price to pay!

School holidays for parents

School holidays - eagerly looked forward to by students, somewhat dreaded by parents. Parents know they will have to deal with bored kids, no regular groups/classes, childcare as they work and many disruptions they don’t get through term time.

Parents also look forward to less rushed mornings (no 9am bells!), time with their children, no homework and not having to keep up uniforms and packed lunches.

So we’re starting this category on the blog to help parents make the most of school holidays – let’s face, you’re likely to have 3 or 4 sets of holidays every year for over 10 years so you may as well get used to them!

If you have any suggestions for school holiday activities or coping strategies, please add them as comments or use our contact form to share them with us.

Before buying online…

Computer shopping by creditShopping online is very convenient and easy, but before you start shopping think about which site you buy from.

Unless it really is a unique product, shop around and compare potential stores by asking the following questions:

  • does the site look credible
  • location clearly specified
  • delivery charges clearly specified and easy to find
  • do they answer any queries promptly
  • read some testimonials
  • do they sell other things you may also want so you can save time and money

Buying from overseas

Buying from overseas is easy with the internet – possibly too easy for those unaware of the implications of it.

Before buying something from overseas, consider the following:

  • currency conversion – a $10 item may not be such a bargain once you convert it to AUD
  • bank charges for currency conversions – banks usually have a fee for converting anything to or from AUD so you may want to allow for that when comparison shopping
  • freight/delivery costs – the standard prices listed on the site may not apply for an Australian delivery so check these details carefully, and email them first if you’re not sure
  • customs duty on some items may be substantial. Check if duty is payable on your purchases and then calculate the extra cost and potential delivery delays
  • delivery times
  • is there an Aussie alternative? Not only are you likely to save on delivery costs and time, you will be supporting Australian businesses
  • environmental footprint – the further an item travels to reach you, the bigger impact it has on the environment.
  • what happens if you needed repairs or a replacement – sending it back overseas will take money and time

Christmas will soon be here!

The first day of summer, the end of year is looming, the kids are tired yet excited, BBQs and parties are warming up, the shops are crazy – all the signs that Christmas is almost here again.

How close are you to be ready for Christmas? The ideal is to be ready by the end of November (except for food things) unless you like the hustle and bustle of shops in December – but how many of us meet that ideal every year?

Here are some tips and links to help you finish preparing in the next 24 days!

  • shop online as much as possible – no parking, no crowds, choose your own hours, everything is delivered
  • plan what you need as much as possible before starting to shop
  • buy as many things as possible in one shop to save travelling from one place to another (And this will save delivery fees when you shop online)
  • order as much in advance as possible – book a turkey, pre-order some flowers, request a personalised Santa letter,
  • next time the kids want to do something crafty, give them big sheets of paper to make wrapping paper or some cardboard to make cards out of – keeps them amused and saves you buying Christmas goodies
  • entertain the kids with Christmas themed games and activities
  • get gift wrapping done in store wherever possible -0 this is a great time saver and also makes it harder for anyone to ‘accidently’ see what is in the present pile

Visit our Christmas page for more ideas and links, and Merry Christmas!
