Clean fans, no fuss!

A little while ago we added Pirrella to our listings, and we think its pretty cool!

Not only do these fan blade covers save you work and time as the blades won’t need cleaning, they also keep you off ladders and chairs which is much safer. We also love the fact that fewer people will use cleaning products on their fans and that fans will need replacement less often – both are big pluses for the environment.

So if you have ceiling fans and hate cleaning them, this is one listing you may find irresistible!

reCAPTCHA

Ever filler in an online form and had to type in a group of letters that usually makes no sense and/or is hard to read? That is called a CAPTCHA and apparently about 60 million are used by humans every day!

A captcha is an abbreviation for ‘Completely automated turing test to tell computers and humans apart’, and is used to reduce spam.

Someone has now come up with a way to make use of that time and effort.

There are many books that are being converted to digital formats via software that can read the symbols in writing. However, this OCR software can’t always resolve every word.

With reCAPTCHA, every time you solve a code to submit anything in an online form, you will be solving one of those unresolved words! With 60 million solutions a day, we can greatly decrease the time require to digitalise those books, and it costs us nothing extra in time or effort!

If you like this idea, you can add reCAPTCHA to your site instead of CAPTCHA – there are even plugins to use it with WordPress and mediawiki, and simple code for php sites.

The full explanation and codes for reCAPTCHA are available at recaptcha.net.

Saving our natural resources

Both energy and water are precious resources that we need to conserve and respect. As individuals, we can do many small things to help – and these small things do add up to be significant.

During the current drought, many urban dwellers have learned to conserve water and the water usage in our capital cities has been drastically reduced as a result. This proves how much our small efforts add up.

The Save Time Online save resources page has a number of information sites that can help us learn about how to conserve these resources.

In the meantime, here are some simple online tips to help:

  • when moving away from your computer for a short time, turn off your screen
  • turn your computer off overnight and for any other extended time between uses
  • link your printer and other equipment to your computer so that turning one off turns off the others – saves you from doing them all manually and ensures none are forgotten to waste power
  • tidy your email folders, favourites list, etc so that your computer and software can run efficiently
  • use natural light where possible and turn off electric lights
  • make sure there is space around your computer so it stays cool
  • in many cases, it is more efficient to listen to music through the computer you are using than to run a separate stereo
  • buy many items from one online store instead of one items from many stores whenever possible – it reduces transportation costs
  • turn off your computer occasionally and go for a walk in the park – saves power and money, and will be refreshing for you
  • keep your computer clean – that includes dusting the back of it regularly so that it can run efficiently
  • read emails and articles online as much as possible instead of printing copies – if you do print, re-use paper and/or print double sided

What is a Wiki?

With the arrival of Web 2.0, there are many new words popping up on the Internet. It can seem like a whole new language that is emerging.

One of these terms is Wiki. In simple terms, a wiki is a database of user generated content that can be added to and edited by members and users.

One of the most well known examples of a wiki is Wikipedia. This is a free encyclopedia that can be added to and edited by users and members of the site.

Delivery costs

When shopping online, expect to pay delivery costs. If an online store includes delivery in their prices, expect the prices of your purchase to be higher than buying it at the local shopping centre.

Many online stores base their delivery costs on rates at Australia Post and so the costs will vary depending on where you are in relation to the location of the online store. For example, if the store you are ordering from is located in Sydney and you are in Perth, you can expect postage to be higher than for someone who is in Melbourne.

Some online stores have fixed rate postage, so no matter where you are, or what you buy, postage will be the same. Sometimes the fixed rate may be based on the number of items you buy. At some stores, the fixed rate will be slightly higher than if it was based on Australia Posts rates, however it may work out cheaper if you are further away from the main location of the online store.

Online stores should have their postage details outlined on their site in a place you can easily see it.  This may be listed on a separate page or in a FAQ section. It is well worth checking this out before you buy so you know how much you are likely to pay at check out.

Sleeping with the fishes by MaryJanice Davidson

Sleeping with the fishesSleeping with the fishes book cover
By MaryJanice Davidson
Piatkus Books Ltd, London, 2006

Just another half-girl half-mermaid meets two boys story – except of course that one of the boys is a merman prince who lives oceans away and the girl has to deal with a fish strike!

Fred is not exactly the stereotyped mermaid, either. She prefers pools to the ocean and is allergic to seafood – and she can’t even swim in her human form!

Fred is a selfish grump who has parental issues just like any other single 29 year old. This makes her a refreshing change from all the perfect heroines in books. Her best friend is a warm metrosexual who provides a contrast to Fred’s one-eyed approach – and a few interesting sex scenes.

A nice, light hearted read that doesn’t end as you might expect…

True value for money…

I just came across the following story/information – it is a few years old and American so the dollar figures probably are nothing like the reality but the numbers aren’t important for the message…

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn’t even touch college tuition.

But $160,140 isn’t so bad if you break it down.

It translates into:

* $8,896.66 a year,

* $741.38 a month, or

* $171.08 a week.

* That’s a mere $24.24 a day!

* Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don’t have children if you want to be “rich.” Actually, it is just the opposite.

What do you get for your $160,140?

* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!

* Glimpses of God every day.

* Giggles under the covers every night.

* More love than your heart can hold.

* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.

* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.

* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate

* A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites, building sand castles, and skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain.

* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:

* finger-paint,

* carve pumpkins,

* play hide-and-seek,

* catch lightning bugs, and

* never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to:

* keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,

* watching Saturday morning cartoons,

* going to Disney movies, and

* wishing on stars.

You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother’s Day, and cards with backward letters for Father’s Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:

* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,

* taking the training wheels off a bike,

* removing a splinter,

* filling a wading pool,

* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the:

* first step,

* first word,

* first bra,

* first date, and

* first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you’re lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren.

You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match. In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will like you, love without counting the cost. That is quite a deal for the price!

Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren!!!!!!!
