The Home Energy Project helps students prove that every household can save energy. It provides education and tips on how to save and improve the environment and reduce the costs of energy consumption.

It is an educational program suitable for years 7–9 students. It was designed to match the curriculum requirements for science and has practical learning activities based on home energy efficiency.

This program shows:

- That small changes in the use of energy accumulate into substantial financial and environmental savings.

- Students how to be more responsible and aware of their energy uses and encourages them to communicate the energy saving methods to family and friends.

- How energy use can be reduced so that energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions are smaller.

The program also involves an energy efficiency calculator so that you can instantly calculate the energy consumption of each room in their house and what each appliances energy consumption is.

With the activities in the program encouraging students to discuss science ideas with their families, it will educate students to help minimise the energy costs at home and bring new thoughts to the table on how to save in costs as they become more aware.

Other tips and ways to save on resources can be found here.

Showing Dad that you care isn’t always about buying him that huge plasma T.V that he’s always wanted. Sometimes the effort put into simply making him a nice breakfast is more touching and remembered.

Though it is traditional to cook for your dad on Fathers Day, I feel that this spirit is starting to dwindle for the easy option of just buying the latest expensive gadget you find in your most recent junk mail magazine.

So how about this Fathers Day you cook for dadand try to make it something special, something more remembered, more touching.
After all, you get to eat the breakfast too! Pancakes anyone?

With Father’s Day being celebrated on the first Sunday of September, it’s a good time to start to think about how much he has helped you over the years and to consider how you can show your appreciation and gratitude.

It’s always good to reflect upon how someone so important to you has helped you develop into the person who you are today, and even if it has been years since this person has helped you, even if you don’t live with them anymore, even if you have children of your own now, it’s always nice to think back to those days when you could turn to Dad and everything would be alright.

With Father’s Day only a few weeks away, start to think of how much Dad has helped and shaped you over the years. What are some stories that come to mind when you think of Dad and how special he is to you?

In 1908, scouting officially started in Australia and 100 years later, scouting is still going strong!

Baden-Powell tested his scouting ideas at a camp on Brownsea Island, England, in August 1907 so the 1st August has been accepted as the anniversary date for scouting which means that today is the 100th birthday of Aussie scouts!

This is the year of the scout in Australia and there are many celebrations and acknowledgements happening throughout the year and in August in particular. What celebrations have you seen or been involved in?

Tomorrow, Tash is joining scouting people from around Victoria for the Fantastic Race and the Scout Street party in the city - will you be there? Cubs are meeting at the museum and then visiting various city landmarks to collect points towards a centenary badge - it will be a BIG day but loads of fun and a great way to show the children different parts of their capital city.

Even if you are not in scouting, why not say hello and happy birthday to any scouting people you spot this month?

From everyone involved in Save Time Online, we wish scouts everywhere a great year and another fantastic 100 years of funn and growing!

It starts tomorrow!

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) runs for the first week of August and is purely for the purpose of encouraging awareness and the use of breastfeeding. WBW brings forth the reasons why breast feeding is better and simply more natural for the development of both baby and mother.

Breastfeeding is the natural way to provide your child with optimal nutrition and immunological and emotional nurturing. Each year WBW has a theme to focus on. This year the theme is “Mother Support: Go for Gold”. Mothers often need support and perseverance when breastfeeding and this year the theme focuses on assisting mothers and their need for help and patience while they provide their child with the best support that they can offer.

Breastfeeding helps protect your baby against ear infections, chest infections, childhood diabetes, asthma, urine infections and many more potentially life threatening illnesses. The nutritional value of breast milk makes it reliable to sustain the immunity and health of your child. However, breastfeeding is not only beneficial for the child. Women who breastfeed are more likely to return to their pre-pregnancy figure faster as well as less likely to develop ovarian and breast cancers.

Raising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding is important as it improves the lives of the women taking care of the child as well as the health of our future generations.

One of the features of email is that they are so easy to share with other people - forwarding emails allows us to share ideas and information, simply and without having to rewrite it ourselves. And we can forward to lots of people at once if we want to.

If you are forwarding emails, here are a couple of tips to make the process better for everyone:

if sending to a group of people, use the bcc field instead of the to field to protect people’s privacy and make it harder for spammers to get hold of addresses (your friends may not abuse an email address, but if they forward it to someone who forwards it…)

when forwarding a newsletter you are subscribed to, delete the information at the end of the email (this can be login details, unsubscribe links and subscription management details) first so that no one else can access your subscription

double check what is in the email - the final part of an email may be great to send to Fred, but check that earlier parts of an email trail are suitable for Fred to read

consider who you are forwarding to - don’t send it just because you can. Send emails that are likely (or at least possibly) of value to the recipient. You may not be selling anything or trying to distribute a virus, but your friends still don’t want piles of irrelevant emails
